Registered Aromatherapist®

Registered Aromatherapist® RA® Essential Oil Therapist® EOT® is a member who:

  • has a minimum of 400 hours verifiable education with a CAOA Approved School or successful completion of the challenge exam.
  • is entitled to use the Occupational Title Registered Aromatherapist and initials RA (2003)
  • is entitled to use the Registered Trademarked Titles Registered Aromatherapist – RA (2010) and RA (2009)
  • is entitled to use the Registered Trademarked Titles Essential Oil Therapist – EOT (2009) and EOT (2009)
  • must comply with the CAOA’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
  • must comply with Continuing Education (CE) requirements.
  • must carry practitioner insurance.
  • has voting rights.

Professional Aromatherapist

Professional Aromatherapist (PA) is a member who :

  • has a minimum of 200 hours verifiable education with a CAOA Approved School or one that meets the Core Curriculum standards; or has successfully completed the challenge exam.
  • must comply with the CAOA’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
  • must comply with Continuing Education (CE) requirements.
  • must carry practitioner insurance.
  • has voting rights.

Associate Member

Associate Member is a member who:

  • has taken a leave from her/his practice for no longer than three (3) consecutive years and does not carry professional liability insurance (PLI). However, Associate Members meet the qualifications for either the professional membership level of Registered Aromatherapist/Essential Oil Therapist, or Professional Aromatherapist.
  • must comply with the CAOA’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
  • must comply with CE requirements.
  • has voting rights.

Qualified Aromatherapist 

A Qualified Aromatherapist Member is a member:

  • who has allowed their Registered Aromatherapist (RA) or Professional Aromatherapist (PA) membership to lapse 

OR

  • who has been an Associate Member for the maximum allowable time of three years and would like to continue to be a member of the CAOA with membership benefits such as receiving a membership discount for attending CAOA Continuing Education Events 

OR 

  • who has retired from the practice of aromatherapy but would still like to be a member of the CAOA with membership benefits such as receiving a membership discount for attending CAOA Continuing Education Events 
  • who is a lapsed member of two or less years and who was previously a Registered Aromatherapist (RA) or a Professional Aromatherapist (PA) and would like to reinstate that designation, will be a Qualified Aromatherapist for two years and accrue twelve (12) Continuing Education Credits per year for those two years.
  • who is a lapsed member of more than two years and who was previously a Registered Aromatherapist (RA) or a Professional Aromatherapist (PA) and would like to reinstate that designation, will be a Qualified Aromatherapist member for three years and accrue twelve (12) Continuing Education Credits per year for those three years. 
  • who is an aromatherapist who took their aromatherapy program from a recognized BCAOA/CAOA school more than 10 years ago, would be recognized as a Qualified Aromatherapist for three years and must accrue twelve (12) Continuing Education Credits per year for those three years. After three years the Qualified Aromatherapist may apply for the Registered Aromatherapist (RA) or Professional Aromatherapist (PA) designation provided their BCAOA/CAOA aromatherapy program qualified for such designation 
  • who is an aromatherapist took their aromatherapy training from a BCAOA/CAOA recognized school more than 10 years ago and has never been a member of the BCAOA/CAOA and would like to use the designation of either Registered Aromatherapist (RA) or Professional Aromatherapist (PA) would be recognized as a Qualified Aromatherapist for three years and must accrue twelve (12) Continuing Education Credits per year for those three years. After three years the Qualified Aromatherapist may apply for the Registered Aromatherapist (RA) or Professional Aromatherapist (PA) designation provided their BCAOA/CAOA aromatherapy program qualified for such designation
  • does not have to comply with CE requirements. However, if the Qualified Aromatherapist is eligible and would like to work toward becoming a Registered Aromatherapist (RA) or a Professional Aromatherapist (PA), he/she would need to accrue twelve (12) CE credits per year • is not required to carry Professional Liability Insurance if he/she is no longer practicing 
  • must comply with the CAOA’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice 
  • has voting rights and may stand for board positions
